The 3 levels of cover

Mandatory

Third-party liability (RC)

Covers the damage you cause to others. Without it, no number plates.

Recommended

Partial cover (casco partielle)

Liability + theft, hail, broken glass, fire, collision with an animal. Essential with Swiss hailstorms.

Recent car or lease

Comprehensive cover (casco complète)

Everything above + damage to your own car, even if you are at fault. Often required for a lease.

Your French no-claims bonus counts

Ask your French insurer for a claims history statement (relevé d'information). Many Swiss insurers use it to lower your premium. Do it before you cancel.
