2027 health insurance premiums in Geneva: the figures and what to do
Health insurance premiums rise by 5.0% on average in Switzerland in 2027, to CHF 412 per month (FOPH announcement of 29 September 2026). In Geneva the average increase is 4.4% (4.3% for adults), and the canton remains among the most expensive in the country.
Average premiums in Geneva in 2027
| Insured person | Average premium per month | Increase |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (26 and over) | CHF 610.60 | +4.3% (over CHF 25) |
| Young adult (19 to 25) | CHF 453 | +3.9% (CHF 17.20) |
| Child (0 to 18) | CHF 157.70 | +4.2% (about CHF 6) |
An average hides big gaps: depending on the insurer, the model and the deductible, two adults in Geneva can pay very different premiums for exactly the same basic cover.
Three ways to pay less
- Switch insurer: basic cover is identical everywhere, only the premium changes. Deadline: your letter must arrive by 30 November.
- Switch model: family doctor, telemedicine or pharmacy models cost less than free choice. Moving from free choice to one of these models is possible at any time of the year; other model changes take effect on 1 January, in writing by 30 November at the latest.
- Adjust your deductible: a high deductible lowers the premium, but you pay more if you fall ill. To lower it, your written request must arrive by 30 November at the latest; to raise it, you have until 31 December.
What if the premium is too heavy?
The Canton of Geneva pays a health insurance subsidy based on your income (the RDU) and your household. It is often paid automatically, but you must apply if you have just arrived in the canton, if you are taxed at source or if you are between 19 and 25. You can apply until 30 November of the year concerned, with the health insurance service (SAM).
