Living on the French side and working in Geneva: what you need to know
At the end of 2024, 114,900 foreign cross-border commuters worked in the canton of Geneva, and 99% of them lived in France (cantonal statistics office, figures reported by Radio Lac). Living on the French side often lets you rent something bigger for the same price, but it changes your taxes, your health insurance and your commute. Here is what to check before choosing.
1. The G permit
For an EU national, the G cross-border permit requires you to return to your main home "in principle every day or at least once a week" (State Secretariat for Migration). It is valid for 5 years with a permanent contract or one lasting more than 1 year. Your employer applies for it in Geneva.
2. Tax: Geneva is not Vaud
- If you work in Geneva: your salary is taxed at source in Switzerland, then you declare it in France, which grants a tax credit on presentation of the Swiss certificate (2047-Suisse notice). In return, Geneva pays the Ain and Haute-Savoie departments 3.5% of cross-border commuters' gross payroll.
- If you work in the canton of Vaud, Valais, Neuchâtel or another of the 8 cantons of the 1983 agreement: your salary is taxed in France, and you give your employer the 2041-AS certificate every year.
- Geneva quasi-resident status: if at least 90% of your household's worldwide gross income is taxable in Switzerland, you can apply each year for a subsequent ordinary assessment, which opens up deductions (pillar 3a, actual expenses…).
3. Health insurance: a final choice within 3 months
As a cross-border commuter living in France, you have 3 months from your first day of work in Switzerland to choose between Swiss health insurance (LAMal) and French health insurance. The choice is final as long as you keep working in Switzerland without a break, even if you change employer. If you don't answer in time, you are automatically enrolled with a Swiss insurer.

The LAMal guide4. Transport
The Léman Express has linked Geneva with neighbouring France since December 2019: 6 lines, 230 kilometres and 45 stations. Lines run to Annemasse, Thonon and Évian (L1), Annecy (L2), Saint-Gervais (L3) and Bellegarde (L6). The heart of the Pays de Gex (Ferney, Saint-Genis, Gex, Divonne) is not served; only Pougny-Chancy station, in the south, is on line L6 at peak times. People mostly travel by car or bus there.
5. Rents by town

- Haute-Savoie, Geneva area Closest to Geneva, linked by the Léman Express (Annemasse) and the tram.
- Pays de Gex (Ain) Close to the airport, international organisations and CERN; no Léman Express in the towns listed, travel by car or bus.
- Chablais The lowest rents on this list, but 35 to 45 kilometres from Geneva; direct Léman Express (line L1).
