Is my car exempt? See the steps

Quick test

Did you use your car for at least 6 months before arriving in Switzerland?

Good news

Your car comes in without import tax.

It counts as household effects: no VAT, no automobile tax, no customs duties. You still have to switch to Swiss plates within the year.

The procedure, step by step

  1. 1

    Declare your car at customs

At the border or at a customs office, declare it as household effects. Keep the customs decision: you will be asked for it.

    On arrival
  2. 2

    Get form 13.20 A

The inspection report, stamped by customs. This is the document that starts the registration.

    At customs
  3. 3

    Take out Swiss car insurance

Your insurer sends the insurance certificate straight to the OCV.

    Before the test
  4. 4

    Pass the roadworthiness test

At the OCV, about an hour. Car empty, clean, compliant: tyres, lights, brakes.

    By appointment
  5. 5

Receive your plates and registration document

You get your Geneva plates. Hand back your French plates and cancel your French insurance.

    After the test
  6. 6

Stick on (or buy) your vignette

CHF 40 a year to drive on the motorway. Electronic version, linked to your plate.
